Patients want a pleasing smile. Esthetics is an essential part of restorative practice and therefore attention must be given to color, shape, surface texture and proportion. Tooth colored restorations have evolved and currently, metal ceramic restorations are widely accepted and commonly used extracoronal restoration.
The concept of combining a brittle material with an elastic material to arrive at more desirable physical properties has many engineering applications. Dental porcelains resist compressive loading but tend to submit to tensile stresses. Therefore, the metal substructure must be designed to minimize these tensile stresses.
