Using auto tooth bone grafts, made from extracted tooth of patient’s own to be discarded, is possible due to the development of tooth banking procedure. Implants operation with auto tooth bone grafts are now performed more than 10,000 cases per year in Korea. Besides the clinical effectiveness, the safety of auto tooth bone graft materials should be guaranteed by the quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) of tooth banking procedures because the extracted teeth are sent to the facility units and deleivered back to same patient for clinical use not for the medical devices but for the medical services.
Over 38 thousand auto tooth bone grafts, which were stored, processed and delivered from Korea Tooth Bank were performed from January 2009 until October 2012 and 476 operations were also performed in Hospital Tooth Bank in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital during the same period.
The written documents of QC and QA in Korea Tooth Bank as well as ultrastructure and microbiologic examinatiopns against the banked tooth materials were analyzed. These data, even the first time and at the beginning, suggested that tooth banking is a safe and practical alternatives to address the ongoing demand of bone grafts especially in implant practice. Tooth banking also broadens the spectrum of bone graft that can be performed in implant dentistry.
